Arsenal complete record Tomiyasu signing
Japanese defender joins from Bologna for £16m
Arteta's defence bolstered ahead of new season
Arsenal have completed the signing of Japanese defender Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna for a fee of £16m.
The 22-year-old becomes the club's record signing, surpassing the £14.5m paid for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2018.
Tomiyasu is a versatile defender who can play at either right-back or centre-back. He has been capped 23 times by Japan and was part of the squad that won the 2019 Asian Cup.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is delighted to have secured the signing of Tomiyasu.
"Takehiro is a young and exciting defender who has a bright future ahead of him," Arteta said.
"He is a versatile player who can play in a number of positions, and he will add quality and depth to our squad."
Tomiyasu is expected to make his Arsenal debut in the Premier League opener against Brentford on August 13.
