What to do during an earthquake
If you're inside:
- Drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.
- Stay away from windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.
- If you are in bed, stay there and cover your head with a pillow.
If you're outside:
- Find an open area and drop to the ground.
- Stay away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
- If you are in a car, pull over to the side of the road and stop.
After an earthquake:
- Check yourself and others for injuries.
- Check your home or building for damage.
- If you see downed power lines or damaged buildings, stay away and call 911.
- Be prepared for aftershocks.
