Earthquake Safety

What to do during an earthquake

If you're inside:

  • Drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.
  • Stay away from windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.
  • If you are in bed, stay there and cover your head with a pillow.

If you're outside:

  • Find an open area and drop to the ground.
  • Stay away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
  • If you are in a car, pull over to the side of the road and stop.

After an earthquake:

  • Check yourself and others for injuries.
  • Check your home or building for damage.
  • If you see downed power lines or damaged buildings, stay away and call 911.
  • Be prepared for aftershocks.
